Buenos Aires means Malbec, tango, and empanadas. And let’s be honest—also steak, steak, and more steak. 🍷🥩💃

It’s a city that celebrates two of its favorite sons at every turn: Lionel Messi and Pope Francis. And while porteños clearly love both, it seems pretty clear that Papa Francisco takes second place to the prolific goal scorer now living it up in Miami.

Buenos Aires doesn’t necessarily grab you right away. It’s not flashy or fast like some other cities, and it is sprawling, making it challenging to fall in love with. But give it a moment. It grows on you in the best way—slowly, deliciously, one bite and glass of wine at a time. The people, the culture, and the sheer joy of eating through the city will capture your heart.

If you believe, like I do, that the best way to understand a place is through its food and wine, here are a few spots that helped me appreciate its charm and identity:

La Brigada

We loved our meal here so much that we came back the next night. The proud owner, Hugo Echevarrieta, claims the steak is so tender it can be cut with a spoon—and I can confirm he’s not exaggerating. The quesos a la parrilla (grilled cheese) was decadent and delicious, although I imagine a cardiologist might feel differently. Either way, it was worth every bite.

El Hornero de San Telmo

📍 Carlos Calvo 455, inside San Telmo Market📞 +54 9 11 3923-5341

You can’t come to Argentina and not eat empanadas. That’s just a rule. This little spot inside the San Telmo Market has a few counter seats and a loyal crowd. It’s casual, a little chaotic, and completely wonderful. You can watch them make the empanadas while you wait—and trust me, they’re worth the wait.

D’oro Italian Bar

📍 Perú 159, C1067AAC CABA📞 +54 11 5051-4059

D'Oro Italian Wine Bar

Argentina may be known for its steak and Malbec, but don’t overlook its Italian side. Thanks to waves of Italian immigration, Buenos Aires is packed with amazing Italian restaurants. D’oro is one of them. The menu is varied, the wine list is extensive, and the burrata is not to be missed. Pro tip: D’oro has a sister location in Miami, but the Buenos Aires original is next-level—definitely not the same experience.

La Cabrera by Gastón Riveira

📍 José Antonio Cabrera 5099 & 5127📞 +54 11 5586-1435

This place is a classic for a reason. If you’re in search of a true Argentine steakhouse, this is the one. It’s always buzzing, the food is rich and flavorful, and the portions are generous (and then some). It’s a must for any foodie in your group. Reservations required—don’t just show up hungry and hopeful.

Buenos Aires may take a minute to reveal itself, but once it does? You’ll be hooked. Between the people, the food, the wine, and the layered culture, it’s the kind of place that lingers long after you’ve left.
